“Up to ’92 we simply played BLACK METAL, then when all the nerds starting ‘crashing the party’ it was time to get some more categories up on the table.”
New Albums
🌶️ The Haunted
Melodic death/thrash, Sweden (Century Media)
FFO: At The Gates, In Flames, Lamb of God
The Haunted has been considered as At The Gates #2, because they were formed by some ATG-members after the breakup of that band. Well, if you have to be number 2 behind any band, you could do worse. The Haunted has always been more immediate, a little more on the hardcore punk side and with an added touch of thrash. I even - even if I’m not going to put it in the FFO’s - hear a little Sepultura in their sound on this first new album in nine years.
🌶️ Vader
Death/thrash, Poland (Nuclear Blast)
FFO: Slayer, Krisiun, Hate
Who doesn’t like Vader? The Polish war machine has a new drummer - Michał Andrzejczyk - and I’m not sure if this ep was meant to showcase the insane chops this motherfucker has, but goddamnit, Vader will never stop.
🌶️ Obsidian Tongue
Atmospheric black, USA (Profound Lore)
FFO: Wolves in the Throne Room, Woman is the Earth, Yellow Eyes
Obsidian Tongue has long lived under the shadows of the larger USBM ravens out there. I don’t know if this release is what’ll get them a bit higher up the echelons, but it doesn’t matter: it’s a great album, moody and melodic. And the members here have proven themselves anyway, in Falls of Rauros, Thrawsunblat and as live members of Panopticon and Obsequiae.
There’s more: Rivers of Nihil (prog/tech death, USA), Sargeist (black, Finland), Vile Haint (experimental black, USA), Weeping Sores (death/doom, USA), Onirik (black, Portugal), Graceless (death/doom, The Netherlands), Kalmen (psych doom/black, Germany), two ep’s from Strychnos (black/death, Denmark) and a live album from Wormrot (grind, Singapore). The rest is in the playlist!
Four new songs
🌶️ Urne (stoner/sludge/metalcore, USA - ft. Mastodon’s Troy Sanders)
🌶️ Impureza (death/folk, France)
🌶️ Psycroptic (tech death, Australia)
🌶️ Månegarm (viking black, Sweden)
The rest is in the playlist!
